d. 1984. A 1916 graduate of the University of California with a degree in civil engineering, Ludy Langer was one of the greatest swimmers of his era. He was largely responsible for making swimming into a varsity sport at Cal, and was the first swimmer to be awarded a varsity letter. He broke world records both while a student at Cal and after. And in 1920, he became both the first Cal alumnus to swim in the Olympics, and the first to win an Olympic medal in swimming.
