Ronald F. Day, an 80-year resident of the South Bay, passed away on September 3, 2017 at his home in Palos Verdes Estates. Born in Torrance, CA, Ron was 80 years old when he died after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He graduated from Redondo Union High School in 1954 and attended Stanford University and University of Redlands. He married the love of his life, Norma, in 1957 and they recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with all of their children and grandchildren. Ron achieved his goal of never fully retiring. He worked nearly six decades in the White & Day Mortuary family business, following in his father's footsteps. The flagpole on the corner of Prospect Ave. and Torrance Blvd. was recently dedicated in his honor, recognizing his years of committed personal service to the families and community of the South Bay. Ron dedicated many years of volunteer service to the South Bay community. He served as president of the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce, Redondo Beach Jaycees, Redondo-Riviera Rotary Club, South Bay Hospital Board of Directors, Redondo Beach Round Table, South Bay YMCA and South Bay Cancer Foundation. He served as Chairman and as Treasurer of the Salvation Army Advisory Board in Redondo and was Chairman of the Capital Campaign to build the new Redondo Beach Salvation Army building. He served on the original bank board of Bay Cities National Bank and also as a board member of Opus Bank. He served professionally on the board of the L.A. County Funeral Directors Association and as President of the California Funeral Directors Association. He was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church of Redondo Beach and sang in the church choir for decades. Ron received many distinguished awards over the years. His most treasured include the Salvation Army's Others Award, the Young Man and the Man of the Year Awards from the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce, and the YMCA Golden Book of Distinguished Service Award. Ron is survived by his wife and soulmate of 60 years, Norma; his children Mindy (John) Kirk of Redondo Beach, John (Claudia) Day of Santa Barbara, Annette (Scott) Godfrey of Poway; his sister Pam Day of Lake Arrowhead; and sister-in-law Cheryl Day of Arroyo Grande. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Christopher, Lauren, and Brian Kirk; Ashley, Julie, Emily, and Andrew Day; and Ryan (Kyra), Samuel, and Jill Godfrey. He was preceded in death by his brother Larry Day. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday, September 8, 2017 from 6:30pm-9pm at the Lighthouse Memorials & Receptions, White & Day Center in Redondo Beach. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 2pm at the First United Methodist Church, 243 S. Broadway Ave., Redondo Beach.
