d. May 9, 2016 at the age of 77. Professional Basketball Coach. He began his association with sports at the collegiate level as a participant in football and basketball during his years at Pepperdine University. Following graduation, he launched his lengthy coaching career, initially on the high school level and by 1969, he had moved on to Long Beach City College. During the early 1970s, he served a stint as an assistant at the University of Nebraska. From 1973 to 1974, he served as an assistant under Bob Boyd at the University of Southern California and from 1975 to 1978, he served his first head coaching stint at Kent State University. From 1979 to 1980, he served as an assistant under Jerry Tarkanian at UNLV and became associated with the NBA, first as a scout with the Sacramento Kings, Atlanta Hawks and Orlando Magic. Hughes succeeded Dick Mota as head coach of the Sacramento Kings during the 1991-1992 season and filled in as interim coach of the San Antonio Spurs after Jerry Tarkanian was fired during the 1992-1993 season. His final NBA coaching assignment was as an assistant with Vancouver Grizzlies. He died from cancer. Chosen as a Distinguished Graduate, 2005 RUHS Centennial Celebration.
