I always remember thinking I was lucky to go to a high school that had the most perfect campus in the world. There was one spot where I could stand and feel the sea breeze blowing, sometimes almost knocking me down (I was a size one back then). On one side I could look toward the ocean, on the other side, I think I could see the athletic field. It always made me feel free. Freedom was very important to our family, having escaped from China, ahead of the Chinese Communists. On my mother's side, we were royalty. My father was a Protestant minister. We knew that combination meant certain death from the Communists. That knowledge was such a central focus of my growing up years that living in the United States, being free to have an education, appreciating everything our family had — those were all things that were part of my daily life. Over the years, whenever I've thought about Redondo, my favorite memory is the feeling of a pure sea breeze blowing on me, and bringing with it the knowledge that I was growing up free.
