Memories

When I entered Redondo High, I was a confused teenager with a normal supply of pimples, starting to notice girls and suffering from emerging hormones. The school was able to focus my energies and turn me into a young adult that enjoyed math, science, and loved athletics. (I lettered in football and track.) I graduated with a scholarship to UC Berkeley. All of my school friends were good students and also went on to college. A little over a year after graduation, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and we were at war with Japan, Germany and Italy. We all became involved in World War II (the only justifiable war in US history). Three of my high school buddies and I managed to get together in 1944 in a New York City restaurant. All of us had become officers: Frank Oliver in the Merchant Marine, Ralph Long in the Army Air Corp, and Shook Stewart and me in the Navy Submarine Service. A photograph of the occasion eventually became front-page news in the Redondo Daily Breeze. All four of us and many other Sea Hawks went on to have outstanding professional careers. Thank you RUHS for the memories.
