A defining moment in art at RUHS: my memory brings me back to my senior year in one of Mrs. Glass' drawing classes. It was held on location in Vincent Park on a beautiful sunny California day. As I sat before the subject of an interesting tree trunk, pondering the effects of light and shadow, I became consciously aware of these two deceptively important elements (light and shadow), and how clearly they describe form in its infinite verity. It follows that mastering the use of various mediums such as pencil, pen and ink, water-color, opaque mediums in paint, along with understanding a few principles of color, the subjects and our interpretations of them are unlimited. To summarize, there is something in all of us that when we contemplate the wonder of its presence combined with a seeking and hungry heart we find it revealed as simply at it was on this sunny day at a Vincent Park drawing class in 1952. Keep dreaming, keep seeking, keep fulfilling your heart's desire and your reward will be a freedom beyond this world's concept of freedom.
