Memories

When I think of the many thousands of RUHS graduates over the past 100 years, I am honored and humbled by this selection. Reflecting on my years at RUHS, two specific things come to mind. First, because we were the only high school in the South Bay, we had a diverse mix of students from different backgrounds. We socialized, studied and competed together as Sea Hawks, and to this day many remain close friends. From my perspective, campus life at RUHS provided a very positive and nurturing environment for its students. Secondly, any school is only as good as its teachers and administrators, and RUHS in my era was no different. We had a stable and veteran faculty, most of whom had established various reputations with previous classes. Some were certainly characters, which only added to their legendary status, but I remember most of them as being very competent and caring. Hoping not to slight anyone, but the names of Neff, Sinsabaugh, Rinker, Lindsay, Doss, Striff, Burley, Jacobsmeyer, Cardona, Seifert and Rossi come to mind. However, it was my old JV baseball coach, Hobart C. Uhls, who in 1959 was superintendent of the South Bay Union High School district, that I owe most. He is the man who personally recommended me to the El Segundo school superintendent, who then hired me "on the spot" for what would be my first and only real job in life. For this, I will be forever grateful to Mr. Uhls. Although I was a little better than average student, I believe I have received this award because I was educationally well prepared before I found my "passion," and then was blessed with many talented and dedicated athletes at El Segundo High School. Having said this, I am proud to say that in my heart, I will always be a Sea Hawk.
