My first memory of RUHS was on the first day of my freshman year. I was sitting on the front lawn trying to look as inconspicuous as possible when Lloyd Waller came up to me and said, "You're Jerry Schumacher; I knew your dad — I hope you do as well here as he did." I did my best with a lot of help from a mother who was a widow by the time I was 12 and joined the RUHS administrative office to help pay the bills and keep an eye on me. My other memories are of coach Striff who taught me to run; a mechanical drawing teacher named Monson who taught me to draw; a social science teacher named Snyder who taught me to think; and a guidance consular named Morris who taught me how to select my courses and my future. Finally, the help of my classmates, many who had been with me since entering the Hermosa school system as my father had done in 1916. West Point gave me a creed of "Duty, Honor, Country." Redondo gave me the foundation to adapt that creed.
